“Military Coups in West Africa after 2010 and Their Impact on the Russian–French Rivalry (Niger as a Case Study)”
by researcher Hussein Sabah Elias, held at the Hammurabi Hall, College of Law and Political Science.

The defense committee consisted of:

  1. Prof. Safaa Hussein Ali – University of Kirkuk / College of Law and Political Science – Chair.

  2. Assoc. Prof. Salam Dawood Ghuzail – University of Anbar / College of Political Science – Member.

  3. Assoc. Prof. Raji Yousif Mahmoud – University of Kirkuk / College of Law and Political Science – Member.

  4. Prof. Abdulkhaliq Shamil Mohammed – University of Kirkuk / College of Law and Political Science – Member & Supervisor.

The thesis aimed to study the phenomenon of military coups in West African and Sahel states after 2010, focusing on the Niger coup as a model to analyze the regional and international dimensions of these coups, particularly their impact on the Russian–French rivalry in the region.

The findings revealed that the military coup in Niger created new opportunities for Russia in Africa after the Ukraine war, which contributed to the withdrawal of French and American forces from West Africa and the Sahel. This, in turn, strengthened the stability of military regimes in the region and provided Moscow with greater leverage to exert pressure on Western powers, especially the United States and France.
